Understanding the mechanisms of immune evasion in breast cancer: opportunities and challenges
Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women world-wide. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease. Immunotherapy is one of paradigm shift approaches for cancer therapies, including breast cancer. However, efficacy of immunotherapy is dependent on breast cancer subtype and disease stage. Heterogeneity within tumors and the tumor microenvironment (TME) are key determinants of responsiveness (or resistance) to immunotherapy. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms that affect the efficacy of immunotherapy is critical for developing new therapeutic approaches to overcome immune evasion and resistance. The goal of this specific collection is to provide comprehensive discussions of the factors, molecules and pathways that underlie immune evasion in the context of breast cancer and provide a critical assessment of current research and clinical advances on overcoming immune evasion and therapeutic resistance, along with future perspectives. Manuscripts aim to explore, but are not limited to:• Mechanisms of immune suppression and immune evasion in breast cancer.• Breast cancer subtypes and immune response; “Hot” and “cold” tumors• Novel strategies to target immune suppressive cells in TME.• Chemo-immune and endocrine-immune combination therapies • Adverse effects of immunotherapy • Critical assessment of clinical landscape of immunotherapy for breast cancer• Clinical trial of advanced immunotherapy treatment on breast cancer (e.g., ICI, CAR-T, TCR-T, tumor vaccine, combination studies, etc)Types of manuscripts:We welcome the submission of Original Research, Short Report, Review and Mini-Review..
