Unlocking the Potential of Agri-Food Byproducts: Extraction, Characterization, and Functional Applications of Natural Products
The sustainable food science arena is increasingly focused on the utilization of agri-food byproducts, recognizing these materials not as waste but as rich sources of bioactive compounds with far-reaching potential. Despite their composition of valuable phytochemicals and nutrients, agri-food byproducts remain significantly underutilized, primarily due to inefficiencies in extraction, insufficient characterization, and gaps in economic and environmental feasibility. Recent technological advances, including the use of green solvents and enzyme-assisted extraction, have propelled new possibilities in upcycling, while studies underscore the importance of these advances in reducing waste and fostering circularity within the bioeconomy. However, existing literature reveals challenges regarding process scalability, regulatory hurdles, insufficient functional characterization, and limited real-world applications of extracted bioactives, signaling a pressing need for interdisciplinary investigation and innovation. This Research Topic aims to consolidate and advance the current state of knowledge on extracting, characterizing, and functionally applying bioactive natural products derived from agri-food byproducts. Its objectives are to critically evaluate extraction techniques; deepen understanding of bioactive profiles; explore the role of novel encapsulation methods in preserving and delivering these compounds; and document successful integration into foods, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Additionally, it seeks to address questions related to optimizing bioactive yield, purity, and stability; improving cost-effectiveness; integrating process sustainability; and navigating safety and regulatory frameworks surrounding upcycled ingredients. Ultimately, the goal is to foster innovative valorization models, bridge gaps between fundamental research and industrial practice, and support sustainable development through effective resource use.Within the boundaries of sustainable valorization and the functional exploitation of agri-food byproducts, contributions addressing extraction, characterization, techno-economic, and application topics are welcomed.
