Unraveling sex and gender differences in metabolic and inflammatory drivers of cardiovascular and renal disorders

Cardiorenal disease represents a major global health challenge, characterized by the intricate interplay between cardiovascular and renal dysfunction. Increasing evidence reveals that sex and gender significantly modulate the metabolic and inflammatory processes underlying these conditions. While both biological sex and socially constructed gender roles influence disease manifestation and outcomes, their distinct and overlapping contributions remain incompletely understood. Recent studies have identified sex-based variations in lipid metabolism, glucose regulation, immune activation, and hormonal signaling as key mediators of cardiovascular and renal risk. However, despite these insights, the majority of preclinical models and clinical trials remain insufficiently stratified by sex or inclusive of gender-diverse populations, leaving critical knowledge gaps in risk prediction, biomarker discovery, and personalized treatment strategies. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how sex and gender shape the metabolic and inflammatory pathways that drive cardiorenal diseases. The overarching goal is to elucidate mechanisms linking obesity, insulin resistance, and immune dysregulation to cardiovascular and renal dysfunction, while examining how these mechanistic relationships differ between men, women, and gender-diverse individuals. Researchers are encouraged to address hypotheses related to sex-informed biomarkers, hormonal and genetic influences on disease progression, and differential responses to pharmacological and lifestyle interventions. Ultimately, this effort seeks to foster more equitable and precise prevention and care strategies through the integration of sex and gender as central biological and social determinants in clinical and translational research. To gather further insights into the interconnection between sex, gender, and the metabolic–inflammatory basis of cardiorenal disease, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Sex- and gender-specific mechanisms in cardiorenal pathophysiology-Hormonal, genetic, and molecular mediators of metabolic and inflammatory risk-Sex-informed biomarkers for cardiovascular and renal disease progression-Differential therapeutic and pharmacological responses by sex and gender-Epidemiological evidence of sex and gender disparities in cardiorenal outcomesThe role of obesity, insulin resistance, and inflammation across sexes and genders-Translational models incorporating sex and gender perspectivesArticle types: Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Translational Study.
