Unravelling viral epidemics: Molecular and phylogenetic insights into emergence and transmission pathways

The field of molecular epidemiology has brought a transformative perspective to the study of viral infections by integrating molecular data and phylogenetic methods with traditional epidemiological frameworks. Recent advances have allowed for heightened scrutiny of pathogen origins, mutation rates, and the spread of novel viral strains, highlighting the critical intersections between evolutionary biology and public health. Notably, phylogenetic analyses now serve as a cornerstone for reconstructing the transmission dynamics of emerging viruses, as demonstrated during recent epidemic events such as the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and persistent outbreaks of other pathogens like influenza, HIV, and Ebola. Despite these milestones, unresolved gaps remain regarding the precise mapping of transmission events, real-time surveillance accuracy, and the prediction of future outbreaks, emphasizing the need for ongoing improvement in both methodologies and data integration. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding of viral transmission pathways, origins, and evolutionary mechanisms through the application of cutting-edge molecular epidemiology and phylogenetics. By leveraging high-resolution genetic data and innovative analytical strategies, the aim is to uncover the factors shaping the emergence, adaptation, and dissemination of viral pathogens. The objective is to move beyond conventional descriptions and toward robust, evidence-based insights that inform actionable strategies for outbreak detection, control, and prevention, ultimately supporting data-driven public health interventions in the face of evolving viral threats. To gather further insights into the molecular evolution and phylogenetic tracking of viral infections, the scope of this Research Topic encompasses advanced analytic methods and interdisciplinary perspectives related to the emergence and spread of viral pathogens. We are particularly interested in research that applies, develops, or critiques phylogenetic approaches to public health challenges. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Real-time molecular surveillance and outbreak tracingo Phylodynamic modeling of transmission networkso Mechanisms of viral emergence and evolutionary changeo Integration of genomic, epidemiological, and clinical datao Methodological innovations and bioinformatics toolsAppendix:We invite submissions in the form of Original Research articles, comprehensive Reviews and Mini-Reviews, Methods papers, and Brief Research Reports detailing novel findings or case studies.
