Vaccines for Neglected Tropical Diseases in Endemic and Climate-Sensitive Settings
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in many low- and middle-income countries, disproportionately affecting populations living in endemic and underserved settings. Vaccines have the potential to substantially reduce the burden of NTDs; however, their development, evaluation, and implementation face unique challenges in contexts characterized by intense transmission, pre-existing immunity, health-system constraints, and increasing environmental and climate variability.Climate change is altering the epidemiology of many tropical diseases by influencing vector distribution, transmission dynamics, and seasonality. These changes have important implications for vaccine design, effectiveness, deployment strategies, and long-term impact. Understanding how vaccines perform and can be optimally used in endemic and climate-sensitive settings is therefore critical for advancing equitable and sustainable disease control and elimination efforts. This Research Topic seeks to bring together interdisciplinary research that addresses progress, gaps, and future strategies for vaccines targeting neglected tropical diseases in real-world endemic contexts. We welcome contributions spanning basic science, clinical research, epidemiology, implementation science, and policy that advance understanding of how vaccines can be developed and deployed effectively under complex ecological and health-system conditions. This collection welcomes submission on, but not limited to, the following themes:• Progress and challenges in vaccine development for neglected tropical diseases;• Immune responses, immune imprinting, and correlates of protection in endemic populations;• Vaccine safety and effectiveness in settings with pre-existing immunity;• Climate change and its implications for vaccine strategy, implementation, timing, and target populations;• Serosurveillance, cohort studies, and real-world vaccine effectiveness assessments;• Programmatic, operational, and health-system barriers to vaccine delivery;• Equity, ethics, and policy considerations in NTD vaccination;• Innovative vaccine platforms and future directions for NTD vaccine research;• Modelling tools to estimate the burden of disease due to climate change as well as to model the impact of future vaccinations (on infections, disease, death, and DALYs).
