Veterinary Microbiology, Animal Health, and One Health Approaches for Sustainable Food Systems
Sustainable food systems rely on healthy animals, safe food production, and balanced interactions among animals, humans, and the environment. However, livestock production systems worldwide are increasingly challenged by emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), foodborne pathogens, environmental contamination, and climate-related pressures. Microorganisms play a critical role in animal health, productivity, disease transmission, and ecosystem resilience, making veterinary microbiology an essential component of sustainable food production. Within the One Health framework, understanding microbial dynamics across animal, environmental, and food systems is fundamental to addressing current and future threats to food security, public health, and agricultural sustainability. This Research Topic aims to advance knowledge on the role of microorganisms and microbial ecosystems in animal health and sustainable food systems through a One Health perspective. We seek to bring together multidisciplinary research that improves our understanding of host–microbe–environment interactions and their implications for livestock production, food safety, and ecosystem sustainability. Particular emphasis is placed on innovative approaches for disease prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, microbial ecology, animal microbiomes, zoonotic disease surveillance, and sustainable management strategies that support resilient food production systems. By integrating expertise from veterinary medicine, microbiology, animal science, environmental health, and food safety, this collection aims to promote evidence-based solutions that contribute to long-term food sustainability and global health. We welcome Original Research, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Perspectives, and Methodological Papers addressing microbial factors that influence animal health, food safety, and sustainable food production. Topics include veterinary infectious diseases, animal microbiomes, antimicrobial resistance, zoonotic and foodborne pathogens, microbial ecology in livestock and aquaculture systems, farm biosecurity, disease surveillance, and feed-, water-, and environment-associated microbiology. Studies evaluating sustainable alternatives to antimicrobial use, including probiotics, postbiotics, and bacteriophages, are encouraged. Submissions involving food-producing animals and interdisciplinary studies employing molecular, genomic, microbiome, epidemiological, translational, or field-based approaches that support food safety, livestock sustainability, and One Health outcomes are particularly welcome.
