Vol II Crash Prevention and Protection Challenges for All Road Users

ContextRoad traffic crashes still claim around 1.19 million lives each year, according to the World Health Organization, and vulnerable road users — pedestrians, cyclists, and riders of electric two-wheelers and micromobility devices — account for more than half of those deaths. The traffic mix keeps diversifying, urban environments grow more cluttered, and the line between “driver”, “rider”, and “pedestrian” is blurring as automation and shared mobility spread.Volume I showed that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), sensor-based perception, and intelligent occupant protection each move the needle, yet gaps remain in how these layers work together across perception, active avoidance, and post-crash protection.Scope of Volume IIVolume II invites new multidisciplinary research that pushes the integrated intelligent safety agenda forward across the full driving process:•Perception. Robust detection of vulnerable road users (VRUs) in cluttered, occluded, or adverse-weather scenarios; modeling of avoidance postures and risk levels; multi-sensor fusion for complex urban traffic.•Active avoidance. Reducing delay across prediction, decision-making, control, and vehicle response; cutting missed, late, and false alarms; closing the gap between algorithmic intent and vehicle dynamics.•Occupant protection. Adaptive restraint strategies for non-standard postures (rearward-leaning, reclined, rotated seats), high-intensity crashes, and automated driving use cases; seat energy absorption and posture control.Topics of interestFrontiers Media SA · Research Topic Proposal · ConfidentialWe welcome original research, reviews, methods, and data papers that report recent advances, propose new countermeasures, or evaluate intelligent safety technologies for future transportation. Topics include, but are not limited to:•Accident analysis and scenario modeling•Data-driven crash risk prediction and injury risk analysis•Data-driven crash protection configuration decision modeling•Perception of hazardous traffic situations•Prediction of vulnerable road users’ trajectories•Advanced safety technologies for VRU protection•Active intelligent safety technologies and measures•Occupant adaptive crash protection•Integrated safety systems for automated and connected vehicles (new)•Safety implications of micromobility and shared mobility (new)•Human factors and HMI in driver–automation hand-over (new)Contributions that bridge perception, decision-making, and protection — rather than treating them in isolation — are especially encouraged.
