Wearable sensors for enhanced cognitive engagement in STEM education
Wearable technology is at the forefront of revolutionizing the modern educational experience by allowing real-time monitoring of cognitive and emotional states. This Research Topic delves into the potential of multisensory wearable systems—such as EEG headsets, electrodermal sensors, eye trackers, and heart rate monitors—in fostering cognitive engagement within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education. With increased challenges in maintaining student attention and motivation in digital learning environments, wearable technology provides a novel, data-driven approach that can transform teaching strategies and enhance overall learning outcomes. Current challenges include understanding the integration of these technologies and addressing ethical considerations concerning biometric data in education. This Research Topic aims to explore the full potential of integrating physiological and behavioral sensing technologies within educational settings, particularly in STEM disciplines. By bridging disciplines like neuroscience, education, human-computer interaction, and affective computing, this inquiry seeks to examine how sensor data can be applied alongside adaptive learning technologies to provide scalable, real-time interventions that enhance student engagement. The objective is to cultivate a research foundation for practical applications that consider ethical implications, ensuring the improvement of cognitive engagement in education using wearable tech.To gather further insights into integrating wearable sensors within educational STEM environments, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Detection and interpretation of cognitive states such as attention, stress, or mind-wandering through wearable sensors• Development of multisensory and multimodal interfaces responding to learners' physiological signals• Adaptive educational platforms powered by real-time biosensor data• Case studies and pilot programs involving wearable devices in STEM classrooms• User-cenered design and usability studies for educational wearables• Data analytics and machine learning techniques for processing physiological signals in learning contexts• Ethical considerations, data privacy, and implications of biometric monitoring in educational settings• Comparative studies evaluating learning outcomes with and without wearable-enhanced interventionsWe welcome various article types, including Original Research, Reviews, Methods, Technology Reports, Case Reports, Hypotheses and Theories, Perspectives, and Policy and Practice Reviews, with contributions from interdisciplinary teams and international collaborators. This collective effort aims to propel the development of cognitively aware, responsive learning landscapes in STEM education globally.
