Women in Antibiotics Research
We are delighted to propose this Frontiers in Antibiotics Research Topic, Women in Antibiotics Research, as a dedicated article collection celebrating the achievements and contributions of women researchers across the full breadth of antibiotics research.Antibiotics remain central to modern medicine, yet their discovery, development, optimisation, delivery, and stewardship are facing unprecedented scientific, clinical, and public health challenges. The need for new antibiotics, improved diagnostics, better surveillance, effective preventive strategies, robust pharmacological evidence, and sustainable approaches to antimicrobial use has never been greater. Addressing these challenges requires diverse expertise across disciplines, sectors, and geographies. At the same time, women continue to be underrepresented in many areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and senior academic leadership. This Research Topic seeks to highlight the work, leadership, and contributions of women researchers in antibiotics research, while showcasing the diversity, quality, and global relevance of research being led by women across this field. We welcome submissions from across the full scope of Frontiers in Antibiotics, including antibiotic discovery and development, antimicrobial pharmacology, antibiotic use in clinical settings, enhanced epidemiology and preventive strategies, diagnostics, surveillance, stewardship, implementation, and antibiotic resistance. Contributions may address antibiotics in human health, animal health, agriculture, the environment, or One Health contexts. This collection aims to bring together original research, reviews, perspectives, methods, brief research reports, policy and practice analyses, and other article types accepted by the journal. We particularly welcome work that advances understanding, innovation, or practice in areas including, but not limited to:• Discovery, design, development, and evaluation of new antibiotics or antibiotic alternatives;• Mechanisms, epidemiology, and evolution of antibiotic resistance;• Antimicrobial pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and treatment optimisation;• Antibiotic use, prescribing, stewardship, and implementation in clinical or community settings;• Diagnostics, surveillance, and data-driven approaches to guide antibiotic use and resistance control;• Preventive strategies, infection prevention, vaccination, and public health interventions relevant to antibiotic use and resistance;• Mathematical modelling, health economics, policy, and decision-support approaches in antibiotics research;• One Health approaches linking human, animal, agricultural, and environmental dimensions of antibiotic use and resistance;• Equity, access, and global health challenges related to antibiotics, diagnostics, treatment, and stewardship.Through this Research Topic, we aim to provide a platform for women researchers working across antibiotics research to share advances in theory, experiment, methodology, clinical practice, public health, and policy. In doing so, the collection will celebrate the breadth and impact of women’s contributions and leadership in the field, and support greater visibility, connection, and collaboration across the antibiotics research community. Please note: To be considered for this collection, the first, last and/or corresponding author should be a researcher who identifies as a woman.
