Women in Medical Engineering Research

The interdisciplinary field of medical engineering has been at the forefront of technological innovation and healthcare transformation, leveraging engineering principles to solve medical challenges and improve patient outcomes. Despite gradual progress, women continue to be underrepresented in medical engineering, particularly in leadership positions and high-impact research roles. Recent studies have illuminated persistent challenges, including gender biases, pay disparities, and fewer opportunities for advancement. As a result, the pivotal roles women play in shaping interdisciplinary medical research and advancing patient-centered care remain understated. This trend is particularly troubling given evidence that teams with broad representation foster more innovative problem-solving and are associated with improved healthcare technologies and outcomes.Frontiers in Medical Engineering is committed to providing a platform to showcase the achievements of women researchers across all areas of medical engineering. This Research Topic, Women in Medical Engineering Research, aims to feature the wide-ranging expertise of women in the field, presenting innovative advances in theory, experimentation, and methodology, to address urgent healthcare challenges. This article collection is open for submissions across all sections of the journal, and new articles will be added as they are published. It welcomes research articles, reviews, case studies, and perspectives, including but not limited to theoretical advances, experimental innovation, and methodology. Submissions may focus on scientific research as well as topics including, but not limited to, career development, equity, and leadership. Please note: to be considered for publication in this collection, the first or last author should be a researcher who identifies as a woman.
