Women in Protistology: 2026

We are delighted to present the inaugural “Women in Protistology” series of article collections. Women currently account for approximately 33.3% of researchers globally, indicating persistent underrepresentation in scientific and technological fields. The long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields and STEM research. However, science and gender equality are essential for sustainable development, as highlighted by UNESCO. Initiatives that specifically address these disparities are crucial for fostering diverse perspectives and accelerating scientific progress.Frontiers in Protistology is proud to offer this platform to promote the work of women scientists. The work presented here highlights the diversity of research performed across the entire breadth of protistology and presents advances in theory, experiment, and methodology with applications to compelling problems. Please note: to be considered for this collection, the first or last author should be a researcher who identifies as a woman. Topic editors: Genoveva Esteban, Laura Utz, Noemi Fernandes Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78094/women-in-protistology-2026
