Women in Toxicology 2026

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we are delighted to present the 2026 Women in Toxicology Research Topic. At present, fewer than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes continue to discourage girls and women from pursuing science-related fields, particularly STEM research. Yet science and gender equality are essential to achieving sustainable development, as highlighted by UNESCO. To help change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes challenged, and girls and women encouraged to pursue careers in STEM. This Research Topic aims to celebrate, amplify, and advance the scientific achievements of women in toxicology. By providing a dedicated platform, the initiative seeks to foster the recognition of women researchers and encourage the next generation of women to pursue careers in environmental toxicology. Key objectives include showcasing diverse scientific advances led by women, exploring innovative methodologies, and strengthening support networks and mentorship opportunities. The topic welcomes research that not only advances fundamental and applied toxicology but also highlights issues of equity, representation, and professional development. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses all areas of toxicology, with an emphasis on promoting the work of women scientists and addressing gender equity within the field. Submissions are limited to research for which the first or last author identifies as a woman. To gather further insights into the contributions and challenges faced by women in toxicology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: - Cutting-edge research in environmental toxicology led by women scientists - Innovative experimental, theoretical, and methodological approaches in toxicology - The role of mentorship and professional development in advancing women’s careers - Case studies illustrating the impact of gender diversity in toxicology research teams - Strategies and interventions to overcome gender bias and stereotypes in STEM - Reflections and perspectives on supporting and empowering the next generation of women in toxicology Please note: to be considered for this collection, the first or last author should be a researcher who identifies as a woman.
