Women's Health in the Era of Emerging Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance: Intersections, Challenges, and Innovative Solutions

Infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represent two of the most pressing global health challenges of the twenty-first century, with profound implications for women's health across the life course. Biological, social, economic, and healthcare-related factors shape women's unique vulnerabilities to infectious diseases, influencing disease exposure, susceptibility, diagnosis, treatment outcomes, and long-term health consequences. At the same time, the growing threat of AMR is compromising the effectiveness of therapies used to prevent and treat infections that disproportionately affect women, including urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted, maternal, and healthcare-associated infections. This Research Topic seeks to advance understanding of the complex interactions between infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and women's health in diverse settings and populations. We welcome multidisciplinary contributions that examine the epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and control of infectious diseases affecting women, as well as emerging evidence on gender-specific determinants of antimicrobial use and resistance. Particular attention will be given to research addressing pregnancy-related infections, reproductive and sexual health, maternal morbidity and mortality, neglected infectious diseases, emerging and re-emerging pathogens, and the impact of AMR on women's health outcomes. The Research Topic also aims to highlight innovative approaches to surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, vaccination, diagnostics, infection prevention, and public health interventions that promote equitable healthcare for women. Contributions exploring health disparities, social determinants of health, policy frameworks, implementation science, and One Health perspectives are especially encouraged.
