Workplace Challenges and Strategies in the Age of Generative AI
The field of organizational psychology is presently challenged by the rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies—such as large language models and image generators—into workplace practices. While these technologies offer substantial opportunities for heightened efficiency and innovation, they also introduce a range of complex psychological challenges for employees and teams. Alongside well-documented issues such as job insecurity and role ambiguity, new concerns are surfacing regarding team dynamics, employee isolation, burnout, and the impact on workplace creativity and innovation. In particular, the transition to AI-augmented work may disrupt established collaboration patterns, threaten team cohesion, and inadvertently increase social isolation—especially in remote or hybrid work settings. The pressure to continually innovate and upskill in the face of rapid technological change can also contribute to heightened psychological stress and burnout. At the same time, generative AI may serve as a catalyst for creative ideation and cross-disciplinary teamwork, making it crucial to understand not only the risks but also the potential for positive transformation.Current literature has only begun to scratch the surface of these psychological ramifications, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of how AI adoption impacts mental health, employee resilience, social capital, and workplace climate. Questions remain about the role of leadership, organizational culture, and support systems in shaping these outcomes—both for individual employees and within teams. The scope of this Research Topic is firmly centered within organizational psychology, with attention to psychological consequences of technological change for individuals, teams, and workplace systems. We encourage submissions drawing on theory and research in organizational behavior, occupational health psychology, and related fields.
