Young-Onset and Monogenic Diabetes from Genetic Mechanisms to Clinical Management

Young-onset diabetes presents unique challenges in diagnosis, classification, and management, particularly due to its clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Among these cases, monogenic diabetes represents an important but often underrecognized subset, caused by single-gene defects affecting pancreatic β-cell function. This group includes conditions such as maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) and neonatal diabetes, which are frequently misclassified as type 1 or type 2 diabetes, leading to suboptimal treatment strategies.Advances in genetic sequencing and increased clinical awareness have improved the identification of monogenic diabetes. However, important gaps remain in early detection, accurate classification, and the implementation of personalized treatment approaches. Further insights into genetic susceptibility, epigenetic regulation, and clinical heterogeneity in young-onset diabetes are needed to enhance diagnostic precision and improve patient outcomes. This Research Topic aims to highlight recent advances in young-onset and monogenic diabetes across genetics, diagnosis, and clinical management. Particular emphasis will be placed on translational approaches, including novel diagnostic tools, biomarkers, and precision medicine strategies. By incorporating insights from diverse populations, this collection seeks to improve disease recognition, reduce misclassification, and support more tailored and effective treatments. We welcome submissions on young-onset and monogenic diabetes, including but not limited to:• Genetic susceptibility, polygenic risk, and gene–environment interactions• Epigenetic mechanisms and biomarkers• Clinical identification and diagnostic approaches• Differentiation from type 1 and type 2 diabetes and challenges in misclassification• Biomarkers and predictive models for early detection• Precision medicine and individualized treatment strategies• Clinical management and long-term outcomes of MODY and young-onset diabetes• Population-based studies and cohort analyses across diverse ethnic groups• Emerging technologies, including machine learning, in diabetes classification• Screening and implementation in clinical practice Topic editors: Mansa Krishnamurthy, Amutha Anandakumar, Bodhini Dhanasekaran, RADHA Venkatesan, Mustafa Tosur Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80723/young-onset-and-monogenic-diabetes-from-genetic-mechanisms-to-clinical-management
