Advanced Remote Sensing Technologies for Wetland Management Across Various Landscapes

Wetland ecosystems are distinctive, complex ecohydrological systems that occur across various climatic and topographic environments. Despite their ecological and socio-economic importance, wetlands are increasingly threatened by rapid environmental change driven by climate variability, land-use transformation, rural–urban expansion, invasive species, pollution, and agricultural intensification. These pressures have resulted in significant wetland degradation, fragmentation, and loss of spatial extent across the globe, which complicates wetland conservation and management.Through the integration of advanced remote sensing technologies, this research topic aims to generate innovative and baseline information to support evidence-based wetland conservation, restoration, sustainable management, and climate resilience strategies. Remote sensing and in situ data enhance the understanding of spatio-temporal change analysis, near-future predictions, and long-term monitoring of carbon sequestration, hydrological regime change, climate extremes, and vegetation productivity and diversity. Furthermore, this research topic will contribute to improved monitoring frameworks and support global initiatives, including data-driven decision-making, climate adaptation strategies, policy implementation, and global imperatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals. We welcome the submission of interdisciplinary research studies (i.e., coastal, inland, constructed, and urban wetlands) focusing on advances in remote sensing observation technologies and modeling for detecting, mapping, and monitoring wetland ecosystems across various landscapes, while providing strategic decision-support approaches.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:1. Use of remote sensing observations, drone (UAV) technology, cloud computing platforms (e.g., Google Earth Engine), machine learning, deep learning, and other advanced tools for large-scale data processing to provide insights for wetland ecosystem mapping and management.2. Time-series mapping of wetland ecosystems.3. Impacts of climate change, anthropogenic activities, and natural disasters on wetland ecosystems.4. Integration of remote sensing data to understand wetland vegetation diversity, productivity, hydrological dynamics, and wetland responses to climate extremes (e.g., droughts, floods, landslides, heatwaves).5. Wetland carbon sequestration and long-term carbon storage across various wetland ecosystems.6. Development of conservation, restoration, and climate-smart wetland management strategies.7. GeoAI-based decision-support tools for forecasting and scenario analysis for wetland ecosystems.
