Advanced Technologies for Cognitive Decline: Innovations in Assessment and Rehabilitation

Cognitive decline remains a major area of concern in the fields of aging and neurological health, dramatically impacting individual autonomy, social participation, and the broader healthcare ecosystem. While cognitive deficits may arise from a spectrum of causes—including neurodegenerative, vascular, traumatic, autoimmune, and metabolic diseases—early and precise detection, alongside effective interventions, remains limited by conventional methods. Recent progress in advanced technology presents new avenues to address these limitations, yet much is still unknown regarding their efficacy, accessibility, and integration into standard practice. Current studies have illuminated the potential of devices such as humanoid robots, virtual reality systems, AI-powered analytics, brain–computer interfaces, and remote monitoring platforms to enhance both assessment precision and intervention engagement. However, the field continues to debate the generalizability of promising initial findings, long-term adherence, cost-effectiveness, and ethical considerations of widespread deployment, underlining the necessity of a deeper investigation into interdisciplinary innovation and clinical translation. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how cutting-edge technological solutions can transform assessment and rehabilitation practices in cognitive decline. The main objectives are to analyze the current capabilities and limitations of these technologies, explore their efficacy and clinical usability across diverse populations, and identify future priorities that bridge technological innovation and patient-centered care. Contributions are encouraged to delve into questions such as: Which digital tools yield the most reliable assessments? How can rehabilitation protocols be best individualized through adaptive technologies? What are the barriers and facilitators to real-world implementation? The scope of this Research Topic encompasses technological interventions targeting cognitive decline across the lifespan and etiological backgrounds, with a focus on real-world clinical applicability and interdisciplinary perspectives. It will not include basic neuroscience or preclinical studies without translational implications. To gather further insights in these areas, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Humanoid and socially assistive robotics for cognitive assessment and rehabilitation- Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality platforms to enhance cognitive training and engagement- Artificial intelligence and machine learning for tailored assessment and intervention strategies- Brain–computer interfaces and exoskeleton technologies promoting motor and cognitive recovery- Tele-rehabilitation and digital health platforms for continuous remote monitoring and support Topic editors: Francesca Pisano, Simona Raimo, Alfonsina D’Iorio, Gabriella Santangelo Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79088/advanced-technologies-for-cognitive-decline-innovations-in-assessment-and-rehabilitation
