Celebrating Women’s Contributions to Healthy Longevity Research: Volume II

Following the success of our first Research Topic celebrating women’s contributions to Healthy Longevity research, which reached over 35,000 topic views and 30,000 article views, we are pleased to launch Volume II of this series. The field of Healthy Longevity is pivotal for sustainable development and gender equality in science. Despite the growing importance of this area, women remain underrepresented in STEM research, comprising less than 30% of the global research workforce. Long-standing gender biases and stereotypes have discouraged many women from pursuing scientific careers, particularly in STEM. To advance Healthy Longevity, there is an urgent need to address these barriers, support women researchers, and create opportunities for talent at every career stage. This Research Topic aims to highlight the diverse contributions of women to Healthy Longevity research. It welcomes work from established researchers as well as emerging scientists whose ideas, methods, and findings are helping to shape the future of the field. Contributions from early-career researchers and those developing promising lines of inquiry are especially encouraged, regardless of whether their work has already received wide recognition.Achieving gender equality in scientific research not only empowers women but also enriches scientific inquiry and innovation. This Research Topic will showcase research advancing the understanding of healthy aging through innovative theories, rigorous experimentation, novel methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches. It will also provide a platform for recognising researchers who are building their careers and making valuable contributions to the field. To gather further insights into Healthy Longevity with a focus on gender equality, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Innovations led by women in healthy aging researchEmerging research and promising new directions in Healthy LongevityContributions from early-career women researchers and developing research teamsStrategies to overcome gender-based barriers in scientific careersIntersection of gender and health outcomes in aging populationsEducational and professional pathways for women in STEM related to aging and longevityInnovative women-led initiatives that support research, collaboration, and scientific developmentMentorship, networking, and institutional practices that help new talent enter and progress within the fieldWe invite contributions from researchers at different career stages whose work aligns with these themes. To maintain the focus of this Research Topic, the first or last author of each submission should identify as a woman. This Research Topic seeks to celebrate the achievements of women in Healthy Longevity, recognise emerging talent, and support the next generation of researchers who are helping to reshape the field.
