Empowering Precision Medicine in Neurodegenerative Diseases via Data Sharing Strategies and AI Innovations
This Research Topic is developed in collaboration with Dr. Ornit Chiba-Falek and Dr. Ara Khachaturian’s podcast series, Empowering proteomics and transcriptomics in Alzheimer’s drug discovery (available here). and is hosted by Dr. Michael Lutz and Jean-Marie Bouteiller; access the YouTube recording here. We especially welcome submissions from podcast guests and authors whose work aligns with the themes discussed in the series.Precision medicine holds immense potential to transform the treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. As global populations age, the prevalence of disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease continues to rise, creating an urgent demand for more effective and personalized therapeutic strategies. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, coupled with the analysis of large-scale multi-omics datasets, have opened new pathways for elucidating disease mechanisms, identifying biomarkers, and developing targeted interventions.Despite these advances, the impact of precision medicine in neurodegenerative research remains limited by persistent challenges in data sharing, harmonization, and integration across diverse data modalities. Several major data-sharing initiatives are already in place, including the AD Knowledge Portal, the AMP-PD Knowledge Platform, and the Seattle Alzheimer’s Disease Brain Cell Atlas, alongside repositories for analytical code. Complementary efforts aimed at harmonization—such as the Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project Phenotype Harmonization Consortium and the RNA-seq Harmonization Study—have further strengthened the field. In parallel, funding agencies and scientific journals have issued guidelines promoting transparency and reproducibility in data and method sharing.Nevertheless, fragmentation in policy frameworks and inconsistencies in data standards continue to impede the development of a cohesive and interoperable data-sharing ecosystem. Addressing these gaps will require innovative technical, regulatory, and social strategies that promote interoperability, protect privacy, and engage the public. By leveraging emerging technologies and strengthening collaborative data infrastructures, the research community can accelerate the translation of precision medicine approaches from bench to bedside, ultimately improving outcomes for individuals living with neurodegenerative diseases. This Research Topic seeks to explore how data sharing and AI can empower precision medicine in the context of neurodegeneration. Through a multidisciplinary dialogue, this collection aims to showcase how big data analytics, machine learning, and collaborative research models can catalyze scientific discovery and clinical innovation. We welcome submissions addressing a broad range of themes, including but not limited to:Novel data-sharing platforms and multi-institutional collaborations that enable large-scale research efforts.AI-driven methods for early diagnosis, prognosis, and personalized therapeutic strategies in neurodegenerative disorders.Integration of genomic, clinical, and real-world data to improve disease modeling and therapeutic development.Ethical, legal, and social considerations surrounding AI use and data sharing in precision medicine.Case studies illustrating successful clinical applications of AI-enabled, data-driven approaches.Challenges and solutions related to data privacy, security, and interoperability.By bringing together researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, this Research Topic aims to advance our collective understanding of how AI and data-sharing innovations can elevate precision medicine and improve patient outcomes. You may submit original research articles, reviews, case studies, and opinion pieces that contribute to this rapidly evolving field. Through diverse perspectives and cutting-edge work, this collection will serve as a catalyst for future advances in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases.
