Functional Mobility and Cognitive Health in Aging: Assessment, Monitoring, and Intervention Strategies

Functional mobility and cognitive health are central to maintaining independence, wellbeing, and quality of life in later life. Aging-related changes in gait, balance, strength, physical activity, or activities of daily living may signal broader changes in cognitive and physical function. At the same time, cognitive impairment can affect mobility, fall risk, rehabilitation outcomes, social participation, and the ability to remain active in the community. These relationships are often further shaped by frailty, sarcopenia, multimorbidity, nutritional status, mental wellbeing, and social circumstances.Advances in clinical assessment, rehabilitation, digital health, wearable sensing, and data science are creating new opportunities to understand and support mobility and cognitive health in aging populations. Gait and movement analysis, accelerometry, smart-home technologies, remote monitoring, machine learning, and other technology-enabled approaches may help identify early changes, improve risk prediction, and support personalised interventions. However, important questions remain about the validity, accessibility, acceptability, and real-world implementation of these approaches across different populations and care settings. This Research Topic aims to bring together multidisciplinary research on the assessment, monitoring, prevention, and improvement of functional mobility and cognitive health across the aging process. It welcomes articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Assessment and validation of gait, balance, strength, physical activity, sensorimotor function, cognition, and activities of daily living• Cognitive-motor interactions, dual-task performance, executive function, falls, and functional decline• Relationships between mobility, cognition, frailty, sarcopenia, body composition, nutritional status, mental wellbeing, and quality of life• Physical activity, sedentary behaviour, exercise, rehabilitation, prehabilitation, cognitive-motor training, and other non-pharmacological interventions• Wearable sensors, smart-home systems, digital mobility measures, remote monitoring, artificial intelligence, and machine learning for healthy aging• Functional assessment and intervention for people living with cognitive impairment, dementia, frailty, multimorbidity, or disability• Assistive technologies, person-centred care, integrated care models, and community-based approaches that support functional independence• Feasibility, implementation, accessibility, health inequalities, cultural factors, and the translation of research into clinical and community practiceBy connecting clinical, public health, rehabilitation, gerontology, neuroscience, nutrition, psychology, engineering, and digital health perspectives, this collection will highlight practical and innovative strategies for promoting mobility, cognitive health, and healthy aging.
