Inflammaging, Metabolic Shifts, and Innovative Nutritional Strategies in Geriatric Oncology
In oncology research, aging stands out as a crucial risk factor for cancer, principally driven by cumulative metabolic alterations, chronic inflammation, and declining immune surveillance. The phenomenon of "inflammaging" and metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance and lipid dysregulation, create a conducive environment for tumor initiation and progression. Despite significant advancements in the field, the intricate molecular crosstalk between aging-associated inflammation, nutrient sensing pathways, and cancer remains insufficiently understood. Current nutritional strategies for cancer patients, particularly in the elderly, often lack precision due to the heterogeneous metabolic profiles. Addressing these knowledge gaps is vital for developing effective interventions that cater specifically to the needs of aging cancer patients. This Research Topic aims to address the urgent need to decipher how aging-associated metabolic and inflammatory changes drive cancer aggressiveness and treatment resistance. Key objectives include understanding the mechanistic insights involving senescent cells, adipose tissue remodeling, and systemic inflammation and their role in shaping tumor metabolism during aging. The Topic also focuses on validating scalable, sex-specific nutritional assessment tools and exploring therapeutic innovations such as dietary interventions, anti-inflammatory agents, and senolytics that can disrupt the aging-cancer metabolic axis. With recent advances in single-cell sequencing, AI-driven metabolic modeling, and geriatric oncology trials, this collection provides unprecedented opportunities to advance evidence-based guidelines for personalized nutrition and metabolism-targeted therapies. To gather further insights into the interplay between aging, systemic inflammation, and metabolic reprogramming in cancer progression, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Mechanisms of age-related metabolic dysregulation in tumorigenesis and metastasis. The role of chronic inflammation in shaping the tumor microenvironment during aging.Development and validation of nutritional assessment tools for elderly cancer patients.Sex-specific differences in metabolic vulnerabilities and therapeutic responses.Clinical trials or cohort studies on personalized nutrition interventions to mitigate cancer-related cachexia. We encourage submissions of original research articles, reviews, and methodological papers that integrate multi-omics, bioinformatics, or translational approaches.
