Insights in Molecular Mechanisms of Aging 2027
The field of aging research has seen significant breakthroughs over the past decade, particularly in the molecular mechanisms that drive the aging process. The quest to understand how and why organisms age has long been a central theme in biology. It is now fueled by a growing global aging population and the rising prevalence of age-related diseases. Many questions remain open, such as the precise molecular signals that initiate cellular aging and the points where we could intervene to promote healthier lifespans.Recent landmark studies have shed light on fundamental mechanisms, including chromosomal dynamics, impaired proteostasis, disrupted nutrient sensing, stem cell exhaustion and lipid signaling. Each contributes in its own way to aging. Yet translating these molecular insights into effective geroprotective therapies or preventive strategies remains a formidable challenge. This Research Topic aims to provide a synthesis of recent advances in the molecular mechanisms driving aging, highlight critical gaps and controversies, and propose new questions that can steer future research. By bringing together evidence from across biological and biomedical disciplines, we want to deepen our understanding of how molecular and cellular interactions contribute to aging and to the onset of related syndromes. Specifically, we seek to clarify essential pathways underlying aging, examine how aging interacts with external challenges such as infection, and explore the molecular basis of conditions like osteosarcopenia. The goal is to inspire new strategies to reduce age-associated decline and support healthy aging. We also want to hear from the next generation of aging researchers. We invite early-career researchers, including PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and newly independent investigators, to submit their ideas, data and perspectives. Fresh approaches, new technologies and bold hypotheses often come from those early in their careers, and this collection offers a place to share them alongside established voices. Early-career authors are especially encouraged to submit Perspective, Opinion, Hypothesis and Theory, Mini Review and Original Research articles. To gather further insights, this Research Topic is limited to mechanistic and translational studies that unravel the biochemical, genetic and cellular basis of aging. It does not cover descriptive or purely epidemiological work. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Chromosomal dynamics and their role in aging- Proteostasis and its impact on cellular function- Nutrient sensing and metabolic adaptation in aging- Lipid signaling pathways and their mediators in aging processes- Stem cell function and its decline with age- Identification and validation of aging-specific biomarkers- Links between aging and infection, including COVID-19- Molecular mechanisms of osteosarcopenia and related systemic disorders- New ideas and perspectives from early-career researchers on emerging mechanisms of aging Topic editors: CONSUELO BORRAS, Marco P Brotto Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/87369/insights-in-molecular-mechanisms-of-aging-2027
