Mitochondrial Genomics and Age-Associated Decline
Mitochondria—the powerhouses of the cell—are critical regulators of energy metabolism, apoptosis, and cellular homeostasis. Recent advances in mitochondrial genomics have revealed a profound link between mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations, heteroplasmy, and the progressive decline in physiological function observed with aging. This research topic invites original research, reviews, and perspective articles exploring the intricate relationship between mitochondrial genetics and aging. Submissions may address (but are not limited to):The accumulation of mtDNA mutations and their functional consequences during the aging processMechanisms of mitochondrial quality control, including mitophagy and biogenesis, in the context of age-related declineThe role of mitochondrial-nuclear cross-talk in cellular senescence and tissue degenerationAdvances in mitochondrial genome sequencing technologies and bioinformatics approaches for aging studiesMitochondrial-driven pathologies (e.g., neurodegeneration, sarcopenia, metabolic disorders) and potential therapeutic interventionsMitochondrial epigenetics and gene regulation across the human lifespanBy deepening our understanding of mitochondrial genomics, this topic aims to uncover novel insights into the molecular drivers of aging and to inspire new strategies for promoting healthy longevity. We welcome contributions from basic science, translational research, and clinical studies that shed light on how mitochondrial genomic variation shapes age-associated decline.
