Multi-Source Remote Sensing Time Series for Monitoring Land Surface Dynamics and Environmental Change

Remote sensing now provides unprecedented opportunities to monitor dynamic land surface processes at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The availability of frequent observations from optical, SAR, thermal, and passive microwave satellites enables continuous tracking of environmental changes. However, single-sensor approaches face limitations such as cloud cover, signal saturation, and inconsistent resolutions, making the integration of multi-source time series essential for capturing subtle trends, abrupt disturbances, and long-term surface changes. Key challenges remain, including dataset harmonization, dealing with temporal gaps, uncertainty propagation, and meaningful ecological interpretation. This Research Topic aims to advance methodologies and applications for monitoring land surface dynamics using multi-source remote sensing time series. The focus is on integrating optical, SAR, thermal, and passive microwave observations to improve the detection, characterization, and interpretation of environmental changes across spatial and temporal scales. Contributions that address methodological innovation, data fusion strategies, uncertainty assessment, and real-world applications in ecosystem monitoring, land-use change, disturbance detection, and climate-related impacts are particularly welcome. This Research Topic is limited to the integration, analysis, and application of multi-source remote sensing time series for monitoring land surface and environmental change. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Multi-sensor time series fusion and harmonization- Detection of land-use/land-cover change and ecosystem disturbances- Monitoring of vegetation dynamics, drought, fire, and degradation- Machine learning and deep learning for spatiotemporal modeling- Uncertainty assessment, scale effects, and interpretation of remotely sensed signals in ecological and environmental contexts Topic editors: Lihong Zhu, Wu Ling, Bertrand Ygorra Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79235/multi-source-remote-sensing-time-series-for-monitoring-land-surface-dynamics-and-environmental-change
