Plant Epigenetics for Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience: Novel Insights and Breeding Strategies

As the climate crisis intensifies, traditional genetic breeding alone may not keep pace with the rapid shifts in environmental stressors. While the fundamental mechanisms of epigenetic inheritance are increasingly understood, the challenge now lies in translating this knowledge into resilient, high-yielding crop varieties. This Research Topic focuses on the application of epigenetic variation as a powerful tool for crop improvement and climate change adaptation. We aim to highlight how "epigenetic breeding" can complement classical breeding and genome editing to enhance plant resilience. We are particularly interested in the identification and selection of stable epi-alleles that confer tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses, as well as the development of innovative strategies to manipulate the epigenome for agricultural gain.To differentiate from theoretical inheritance models, this collection focuses on applied methodologies and resilience strategies, including:Epi-GWAS and Mapping: Identifying epigenetic markers associated with climate resilience in diverse germplasm and wild relatives.Epigenome Editing: Utilizing cutting-edge tools such as CRISPR/dCas9-based systems to precisely modify DNA methylation or histone acetylation for trait enhancement.Practical Breeding Integration: Strategies for incorporating epigenetic variation into commercial breeding programs and maintaining stable phenotypes across diverse environments.Priming and Phenotyping: Novel approaches to "stress-priming" crops in field conditions to trigger adaptive epigenetic states that improve seasonal performance and yield stability. We welcome original research, perspective articles, and technology reports that bridge the gap between epigenetic discovery and field-ready breeding solutions, ensuring global food security in an era of climate unpredictability.
