Reactive Oxygen Species: Architects of Aging and Cellular Senescence
Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are pivotal in the aging process, influencing cellular functions and longevity. The production and accumulation of ROS within cells are thought to be one of the fundamental molecular mechanisms driving the aging process. Recent research links excessive ROS levels to cellular damage and senescence, contributing to the phenotypes associated with aging and the pathogenesis of age-related diseases. This has ushered in debates about the potential benefits of modulating ROS levels and the paradoxical roles ROS play in cellular signaling and homeostasis. Despite intensive study, significant gaps remain in understanding the nuanced roles of ROS in aging, necessitating continued investigation into their sources, targets, and mechanisms of action. This Research Topic aims to probe deeper into the dual roles of ROS as both damaging agents and signaling molecules in the aging process. Studies might explore the precise molecular pathways through which ROS influence aging and longevity, the development of innovative strategies to manipulate ROS levels in various tissues, and how ROS modulation impacts age-related diseases. To gather further insights into the complex relationship between ROS and aging processes, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:1. Sources and types of ROS involved in aging2. Mechanisms by which ROS promote cellular aging3. The role of antioxidant systems in age-related ROS management4. The impact of lifestyle, diet, and environmental factors on ROS levels in aging5. Prospective therapeutic approaches to mitigate ROS-induced aging effectsA comprehensive exploration of these areas will be pivotal in understanding how ROS contributes to the aging process and how its modulation can extend health span and improve quality of life in older populations.
