Remote Sensing and Monitoring Technologies for Climate-Resilient Built Environments
Climate change is placing increasing pressure on infrastructure systems and the wider built environment through more frequent and intense hazards including flooding, overheating and severe storms, exacerbating moisture-related deterioration, reduction in mechanical performance and ground movement. These pressures affect not only the performance and longevity of physical assets, but also the safety, health, and wellbeing of the communities that depend on them. Addressing these challenges requires improved understanding of how infrastructure, environmental processes, and human exposure interact across multiple spatial and temporal scales.Advances in sensing technologies across scales, from satellite and aerial observations to in-situ and asset-level monitoring are enabling new ways to observe and assess the condition, performance, and vulnerability of infrastructure and urban systems. Satellite, aerial, and ground-based approaches provide complementary perspectives on asset behaviour, environmental exposure, and system-level performance. However, significant challenges remain in integrating heterogeneous data sources and translating monitoring outputs into actionable knowledge that can inform engineering decisions, asset management, and climate adaptation strategies. This Research Topic seeks contributions exploring how sensing and monitoring technologies can support the resilience of infrastructure and built environments to climate and environmental hazards, and inform adaptation action to future climate risks. We welcome studies spanning grey, green and blue infrastructure as well as hybrid systems that combine natural and engineered assets and environments.Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:• Remote sensing and Earth observation for infrastructure and urban environmental monitoring• Sensing-informed adaptation strategies for resilient infrastructure and cities• Structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation of infrastructure systems• Monitoring and analysis of infrastructure response to climate hazards• Monitoring and analysis of the efficacy of mitigation measures for climate resilience of infrastructure and the wider built environment• Sensing and assessment of green, blue, and hybrid infrastructure systems• Innovative integration of multi-source built environment data (e.g. remote sensing, in-situ, IoT) and weather and climate data as well as digital twins• Data-driven risk assessment, vulnerability mapping, and early warning systems• Monitoring environmental conditions and human exposure within the built environmentSubmissions should demonstrate the use of sensing, monitoring, or data-driven approaches to advance understanding or support decision-making in climate-resilient built environments.
