Satellite and Meteorological Monitoring of Small Mountain Water Systems

Small mountain water systems such as headwater streams, alpine wetlands, glacier-fed channels, and small mountain lakes are critical components of global freshwater supply. These systems sustain downstream ecosystems, agriculture, and human settlements, particularly in mountainous regions such as the Himalayas, Andes, Alps, and other high-elevation landscapes. Despite their ecological and hydrological importance, these systems remain poorly monitored because they are often located in remote and data-scarce environments where traditional hydrological measurements are limited or unavailable. Recent advances in satellite remote sensing and meteorological data products have created new opportunities to monitor and assess these fragile systems at regional and global scales.Earth observation satellites now provide high-resolution information on precipitation patterns, snow cover, glacier dynamics, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and surface water dynamics. When combined with meteorological datasets and advanced geo-spatial analysis techniques, these observations enable researchers to evaluate hydrological variability, detect early signs of water stress, and assess climate-induced changes in mountain water systems. Emerging tools such as machine learning, satellite data fusion, and AI-driven Earth observation frameworks further enhance the ability to analyze hydrological processes in regions where in-situ monitoring infrastructure is sparse. This Research Topic aims to bring together interdisciplinary studies that utilize satellite and meteorological data to investigate the dynamics of small mountain water systems. Contributions may focus on the monitoring of headwater streams, mountain wetlands, small reservoirs, glacier-fed rivers, and other critical hydrological features in data-limited environments. The collection will highlight innovative methodologies, data integration approaches, and practical applications that improve our understanding of mountain hydrology and support sustainable water resource management. The primary goal of this Research Topic is to advance scientific understanding and monitoring capabilities of small mountain water systems using satellite observations and meteorological datasets. Mountain regions often lack dense hydrological monitoring networks, making it difficult to quantify water availability, seasonal variability, and climate-driven changes. Satellite remote sensing offers a powerful alternative for monitoring hydrological processes in such data-scarce environments. This collection seeks to encourage studies that integrate Earth observation data, meteorological records, and advanced analytical methods to assess water dynamics, climate impacts, and hydrological resilience in mountain environments. By bringing together research from different mountainous regions of the world, this topic aims to develop scalable methodologies for monitoring mountain water systems, improve hydrological predictions, and support climate-resilient water resource management strategies. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews, technical notes, and methodological studies that explore satellite- and meteorology-based assessments of small mountain water systems.
