Small Satellites for Earth Observation: Capabilities, Limits, and Scientific Impact

The realm of Earth observation has been reshaped by the integration of satellite technology, with long-term observations crucial in deciphering the complex interactions within the Earth's global systems. Traditional large satellite missions, while instrumental, face scrutiny over their cost, development time, and flexibility. As a response to these challenges, there has been a growing interest in deploying small satellites, including CubeSats, for remote sensing tasks. While these smaller satellites promise advantages such as reduced costs and quicker deployment, questions remain regarding their overall potential and constraints in conducting Earth observations and science of high quality. This Research Topic aims to consolidate expertise in the field of small satellites, with a particular focus on their utility in Earth observations. We seek to explore the capabilities of these satellites in performing rapid-response and high-priority science missions. Furthermore, it aims to delve into the scientific impacts of small satellites, addressing operational challenges, and enhancing data processing methodologies and science products linked to these newer platforms. To gather further insights into the capabilities and limitations of small satellites, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Design and implementation of small satellites and payload sensors for observing diverse Earth system components, such as the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, and ecosystems.- Utilization of small satellite measurements for studying various Earth system components or interactions between these components.- Investigations into the scientific impacts of planned or future Earth-observing small satellites.- Challenges and operational issues related to small satellites and constellations.- Advancements in small-satellite data processing and corresponding science products. We welcome contributions in the form of research articles, reviews, and case studies, that contribute to advancing our understanding in this rapidly evolving field.
