Transdisciplinary Research Approaches to Aging & Longevity

Human aging has become a complex issue worldwide that requires solutions beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. During the 2nd Symposium on Aging and Longevity, which took place in Mexico City in March 2026, leading researchers from Latin America, Europe, and North America presented their research on aging as a complex, multidimensional problem, one that can only be meaningfully addressed through transdisciplinary collaboration. This convergence of perspectives across continents and disciplines forms the foundation of this Research Topic: “Transdisciplinary Research Approaches to Aging & Longevity”.This Research Topic invites contributions that deliberately bridge biological sciences, engineering, clinical research, and population health, integrating methods, frameworks, and evidence across disciplines to advance translational knowledge on aging. We are particularly interested in work that could not have emerged from within a single discipline alone.Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:1. Biological mechanisms of aging examined through multiple disciplinary lenses, connecting molecular, systems, and population level perspectives2. Experimental models of aging developed or validated through collaborative approaches spanning biology, computation, and clinical science3. Omics based biomarkers and precision geromedicine, integrating computational, clinical, and biological expertise to bridge discovery and application4. Nutrition, microbiome, and “smart foods” for longevity, combining nutritional science, microbiology, food engineering, and clinical translation5. Biomaterials, medical devices, and engineering solutions for aging, developed at the intersection of materials science, bioengineering, and geriatric medicine6. Neurorehabilitation and advanced intervention technologies, uniting neuroscience, rehabilitation medicine, and engineering in novel ways7. Women’s aging and age related diseases and conditions, explored through integrated biological, clinical, and sociocultural frameworksThe goal is to bring together research that transcends disciplinary silos and demonstrates the clear added value of transdisciplinary integration, accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into scalable solutions that promote healthy longevity.
